INTRODUCTION
Many bodies and institutions within the construction industry have identified a developing issue in the form of a skills shortage, caused mainly through an ageing population and weak pipeline of new recruits.

Those sectors of the industry which use post-installed anchors for concrete and masonry, particularly for safety critical anchors, are not immune to this challenge.

To install construction anchors and fixings correctly and safely, requires a high level of knowledge and expertise from those operatives carrying out the installation of the anchors and the staff supervising these works.

Currently, these skill levels are not sufficiently high within the industry.

This situation is one that the Construction Fixings Association is highly aware of and in line with the key objectives of the association to raise standards of safety and quality, the association have determined to work with key stakeholders to provide support in this area, and as the leading independent voice in the industry, the CFA leads the way in providing a range of training specific to Construction Fixings, and in particular Safety Critical Construction Fixings.

THE CFA TRAINING AND EDUCATION PROGRAM

To provide education, information and advice to industry stakeholders the CFA has introduced a program to achieve these goals.

  • CPD seminars and presentations

These technical presentations are delivered to all stakeholders and cover all technical aspects of anchors and the processes for safe selection and installation for the functions of design, selection, procurement, installation and testing of post-installed anchors.

Most seminars qualify for Continued Professional Development hours.

  • Certified Training Courses

The training courses CFA currently deliver are for:-

  • Installers
  • Supervisors
  • Proof Testers
  • Advanced Testers

These courses cover a number of levels of competence

BASIC LEVEL – STRONG LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

This level delivers the training through an e learning platform and provides comprehensive content for all aspects of the course involved and fully aligns with the requirements of BS8539:2012

This platform is designed to deliver a flexible, time-effective method of training, which will achieve high levels of knowledge for the candidates.

The Course Modules have been created in such a way that a course can be completed in a single session, or in “bite sized” sections, to fit in around other priorities. The system allows previous elements to be reviewed prior to completing further elements of the module. Candidates will have a 10 week window to complete a specified module, before the module is timed out.

Upon completion of the module and achieving the minimum required result in the final assessment, candidates will be awarded the appropriate certificate of achievement valid for 3 years.

ADVANCED LEVEL – STRONG LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE, UNDERSTANDING & ASSESSED COMPETENCE

This level delivers the training through face to face interaction in a suitable venue for learning and practical experience.

In group sizes appropriate to the specific Training Course, this type of intervention provides a complete learning experience. With detailed content presented in the classroom and practical “hands on” experience provided utilising real life products and equipment.

To ensure common standards are achieved, pre-reading material is provided and a pre-assessment made to create a good balance of understanding prior to the training.

Upon completion of the course and achieving the minimum required result in the final assessment, and meeting practical evaluation requirements, candidates will be awarded the appropriate training Certificate valid for 3 years.
